Senator Bob Menendez to quit after bribery conviction

Menendez said he had 'never violated' his public oath

Bob Menendez resigned from the US Senate after being convicted of accepting bribes, including gold, to help foreign governments.

New Jersey Democrats oppose calls to resign - including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. His resignation came a day after the Senate Ethics Committee began an impeachment inquiry.

Menendez - a former head of the Foreign Affairs Committee - was convicted of 16 counts of corruption. He imprisoned him for decades.

The 70-year-old maintains his innocence and said outside court after being convicted that he "will not defame the public". He will be sentenced on October 29.

CBS, the alkhabrfdakika US affiliate, said Menendez's resignation will take effect on August 20.

's resignation at the end of August will allow him to collect his Senate salary and health insurance. for at least a month while his finances are not good and his wife, Nadine, is undergoing cancer treatment, the New York Times reported.

The alkhabrfdakika has contacted Menendez's office for comment.

Menendez said he will appeal the case, saying he has "no conviction" that the facts "do not support" a trial.

Menendez was elected to the House of Representatives in 1993. In 2006, he was elected to the Senate by John Corzine, who resigned his seat when he was elected governor of New Jersey. In 2017,

previous bribery and conspiracy charges ended in chaos. However, during his nine-week trial this year, prosecutors were able to convince jurors that Menendez accepted bribes to help the Qatari and Egyptian governments.

jurors were told that FBI agents found more than $480,000 (£370,452) in cash stuffed in envelopes and jackets at Menendez's home, as well as more than $100,000 worth of gold. Some of the harassment was presented to a grand jury as evidence.

Two businessmen, Wael Hana and Fred Daibes, are also on trial for asking a lawmaker to illegally help the Egyptian government and receive millions of dollars from Qatari investment funds. The allegations were denied.

A third businessman, Jose Uribe, pleaded guilty and testified against Menendez in court.

New Jersey Rep. Andy Kim won the Democratic nomination for Senate in June, beating Tammy Murphy, wife of the governor of New Jersey.

The New York Times reported that Menendez might consider running for re-election as an independent, possibly getting votes from Democrats at a time when the party is focused on securing the Senate and White House.

His wife's trial, accused of bribery and obstruction, was postponed indefinitely while she recovered from breast cancer surgery.
