President Joe Biden has endorsed Kamala Harris, but what happens next isn't straightforward |
President Joe Biden shocked American voters on Sunday when he announced he was dropping out of the presidential race after weeks of calls for him to resign.
Although he will serve out the remainder of his term, he has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee to succeed him.
The decision throws the party into unprecedented waters, a month before the Democratic National Convention.
This is the next suggestion.
What happens now?
The last time a sitting US president withdrew from his election campaign was Lyndon Baines Johnson in 1968. Therefore, it is not clear how a new candidate will be brought closer to election day.
President Biden has won 3,896 delegates - more than needed to win his party's nomination.
Although the support of Mr. Biden makes Mrs. Harris the most likely candidate, and is no longer involved with the candidate after leaving his delegation.
Finally, it is up to them to vote for whoever they want.
Could there be an open convention?
The Democratic National Convention is scheduled to begin on August 19.
If the Democratic Party does not come together to support a new candidate, it may hold an open convention for the first time since 1968.
voters want The signature of at least 300 representatives - up to 50 from the state - to appear in the election.
primary elections will take place for 3,900 pledged delegates, including voters who are considered loyal to the Democratic Party.
If a candidate does not receive the majority of votes after the first round, a new election round will take place. These elections include party presidents and elected presidents-candidates until a candidate is elected.
Candidates need 1,976 delegates to win the party's nomination.
Who might challenge Ms Harris?
As calls for Mr. Biden to drop out of the race have mounted in recent weeks, several potential replacements have emerged. Gretchen Whitmer, Michigan's
th Democratic governor, has been named as a candidate, although she said she would not consider running if Biden withdraws. On Sunday, minutes after Biden spoke, he said he would do everything in his power to elect Democrats and stop Donald Trump.
Other candidates include California Governor Gavin Newsom, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro.
Some of these people will be considered for the position of president if Mrs. Harris wins the nomination.
