Trump on Harris: 'Is she Indian or is she black? |
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, asked the vice president of the country, Kamala Harris, during a heated discussion at a black press conference.
He was asked if he believed that some of his Republican colleagues called Ms. Harris a DEI (diversity, equality and inclusion), Trump said he didn't know he was black until recently.
"I didn't know he was black until a few years ago when he was black and now he wants to be called black," he said. "So I don't know—India?" Or a child?
Mrs. Harris's mother was Indian and her father was black. He is the first black and Asian-American vice president.
Trump's response to Wednesday's event in Chicago sparked a heated discussion with ABC News anchor Rachel Scott.
"I respect all of them," said the Republican, "but obviously not, because he was an Indian all the time, and suddenly he turned black.
Ms. Scott pressed Trump during the question and answer session to clarify that she believes that Mrs. Harris is a DEI employee.
"I don't really know," said
Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre at a White House press conference like "something good."
"No one has the right to say who they are, how they identify themselves. That is not a right person," he said.
