US to send jets and warships as Iran threatens Israel


The United States is deploying warships and warplanes to the Middle East to help Israel defend against attacks by Iran and its allies, the Pentagon said. In , there was a crisis in the region due to the Iranian assassination of the leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, who was the most important commander of the Hezbollah group of Lebanon.
anti-missile forces have been placed on high alert, the Pentagon said, adding that their contribution to Israel's security is "cloudy".

The leader of Hamas  was killed in Tehran on Wednesday. Iran and its proxies in Gaza have blamed Israel for the attack, which has not yet commented.
Haniyeh, 62, is considered the overall leader of Hamas and has played a key role in negotiating a cease-fire in the Gaza war. The
deaths came  hours after Israel announced it had killed Fu'ad Shukr, the top  commander of Iran's military proxy in Lebanon, Hezbollah.
According to the Pentagon statement, this new project "strengthens the security of the US military ... Increasing security support for Israel and ... ensuring that the United States is ready to respond in a variety of situations." Israel has not immediately commented  on the attack that killed Haniyeh. But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country had inflicted "excruciating pain" on its enemies in recent days, such as Shukr's killing  in Beirut.
He warned the Israelis that "difficult days are coming...we have heard threats from all sides. We are ready for any situation." Earlier in the day, Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said the United States did not see the need to expand.
"I think we're sending a message right away that  we don't want to see an escalation of conflict, we think there's another way here, and that's a cease-fire agreement," Singh said. Netanyahu said on Friday that
  Israeli delegations will travel to Cairo in the coming days for talks on the Gaza ceasefire and the release of hostages.
Hamas launched a war against Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 people. Israel responded with  military operations in Gaza that  killed nearly 40,000 people, according to Hamas' health ministry.
