US President Joe Biden says it has been 'greatest honour' to serve as he ends campaign


 

US President Joe Biden has announced that he will forego re-election, saying "it is in the best interest of my party and my country".
Four months before Americans go to the polls,  the race for the White House is heating up.
It follows a week of intense pressure from the Democrats after the debate show against Republican Donald Trump in late June.
Following  Sunday night's announcement, President Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president. In support of , he said his "first decision as the party's candidate in 2020 was to choose Ms Harris" and said it was "the best decision I have ever made".
Kamala Harris said she "will do everything possible to unite the Democratic Party and unite our nation to defeat Donald Trump."

"Although it is my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and my country that I step down and  focus solely on  the duties of the presidency for the remainder of my term," he wrote.
